Baslow is a charming village on
the edge of Chatsworth Park, surrounded by stunning countryside and
offers some interesting shops and a variety of dining choices in the
numerous pubs, restaurants, tea-rooms and hotels to suit everyone’s
taste and pocket. Bakewell just four miles away, famous for it’s
puddings, also has numerous eating places.
The Peak District, consisting of the white and dark peaks is
renowned for its abundance of open moorlands and beautiful dales and
is of huge interest historically and geologically. Chatsworth
House, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall are just a few stately homes
open to the public. Eyam, known as the Plague village, even boasts
its own Hall, where the family still reside and this is also open to
visitors. Blue John mines in Castleton, where the rare fluorspar is
found, provides an interesting visit with walk-in caves and there
are a host of activities throughout the Peak District, ranging from
walking, rock-climbing, abseiling, potholing, canoeing, hot-air
ballooning, gliding, bike trails, horse-riding etc. to more gentle
pursuits of craft shops, antiques, stately homes, lazy lunches,
cream teas and, last but not least, admiring (and even participating
in), Derbyshire’s unique custom of “Well Dressing”.
